Sweet Pea

2024

Mixed Media/ steel rod, spray pigment, boots

48in x 8in x 48in

"Sweet Pea" emerged during my final undergraduate semester, as I was exploring the potential significance of ordinary, functional objects. While my thesis primarily deconstructed and destroyed the traditional notions surrounding a teapot, both physically and conceptually, this sculpture branched off from the same concept of investigating the potential importance of a mundane item. In this case, a worn pair of boots, although the creative process differed the idea stemmed from idolizing the boots while also accentuating their texture, shape, and inherent identity. The boots are precariously supported by a welded structure, emphasizing their weight and again emphasizing their significance. Without the boots, the structure will not stand, highlighting the piece's reliance on this seemingly insignificant object, elevating its status and prompting contemplation of the extraordinary within the ordinary.
